Lions/Wal-mart: USA Eyeglass Collection
From LCI
Lions Clubs International is pleased to announce that it has entered into an agreement with Walmart to collect used eyeglasses from the public at specified Walmart and Sam’s Club stores throughout the United States. This new program will enhance the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Program, enabling our association to collect increased quantities of usable glasses for humanitarian missions to developing nations.
- Commencing January-February 2010, co-branded collection boxes, bearing the LCI, Walmart and Sam’s Club logos, will be available in the 2,500 US Walmart stores and approximately 500 Sam’s Clubs, with vision centers. These new boxes will replace Lions collection boxes currently in place at the specified stores. For Walmart stores and Sam’s Clubs without in-store vision centers, existing Lions collections will continue at the discretion of the store managers.
- Walmart will ship the collected eyeglasses to their distribution centers, where they will then be delivered to the nearest Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers for sorting, cleaning and processing.
- Usable glasses will be available for Lions and other optical missions to developing nations, where the glasses will be dispensed to children and adults free of charge.
- The Lions/Walmart co-branded program is aimed at members of the public. Walmart and Sam’s Club stores will not be able to accept or ship Lions club collections of eyeglasses from other locations in the community.
If you are involved in eyeglass collection, thank you for your continued support of this project. We encourage clubs to maintain their collection sites throughout the community and send the glasses to the nearest Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center. These collections have had a direct impact on the strength and success of the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Program.
LCI can help to promote your community collections by posting drop-off locations on the association’s Web site at the Club Locator. Clubs can simply provide us with their information via the Lions Recycle For Sight Club Participation Form and we’ll post up to six collection sites. Or, send an e-mail to: .
For further information about the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Program, or to start a collection campaign in your club or district, please contact the Health and Children’s Services Department.

January 2010 Presidents Message
Book Donations: Local author Teresa Funke provided a very interesting and inspirational presentation to our Club last January. Ms. Funke specializes in topics related to World War II, particularly encouraging readers to relate to the level of effort and sacrifice involved, both in battle and on the home front. Over the past year, our Club has supported Ms. Funke with donations to purchase books to be given to local schools as a part of her educational outreach. So far, our Club has donated books to Putnam, Irish, and Harris Bilingual Elementary Schools. The book presentations have also provided an opportunity to acquaint the students with Lions community service activities. Thanks to Lion Bill Funke (no relation) for bringing our Club into contact with Ms. Funke.
New Member: We were pleased to induct Joe Gorman as our newest Lion on January 7th. Joe works for Wells Fargo, and he and his wife, Nancy, live in Fort Collins. Please take opportunity to introduce yourself to Joe and make him feel welcome to our Club and to Lionism.
Membership: According to LCI President Eberhard J. Wirfs, Lions membership worldwide has increased by a net of more than 12,500 members this year, to include the addition of 610 clubs. This is very good news. However, we are falling short in our efforts to increase the membership of our Club. Each member is encouraged to seek out prospective members, acquaint them with our community service activities, and invite them to a Club luncheon. Our Program Chair will distribute a listing of the programs for the following month, in order to assist you selecting a program of interest to the invitee. Also, one of the most important aspects of our Club is the atmosphere of fellowship provided, in the context of our support to the community.
On Thursday, February 18th, our meeting will be focused on prospective new members for our Club. I encourage each of you to invite a friend, relative (spouses are particularly encouraged), or business associate to attend the meeting.
Mark Your Calendars:
- February 11, Valentine’s Day Party.
- February 18, Membership – Plan to bring a prospective new member.
- April 9-10, 6NE District Convention, Embassy Suites, Loveland.
- April 23–24, 9Health Fair.

Bingo – Harold Hartman, Chair
Just a reminder, that Bingo is the way we raise the funds for our Service Projects which help those in need locally, and through Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF). Donating to LCIF has permitted us to recognize over fifty of our members as Melvin Jones Fellows.
